Fitness - Ring the Changes
by Gerwicht Verlea

In the early stages of a fitness drive - the days and weeks
after the decision to get fit has been taken - most people
put a lot of effort in. Even when the body is finding it
hard going the mental strength that comes from the initial
enthusiasm pulls us through. For anyone who has not
exercised for some time the initial gains can be impressive
too. The heart, the muscles, begin to wake up and flush
with strength... we should have done it years ago!

However, as the days pass, although you might be feeling
good, boredom can quickly set in. You have tried out all
the machines in the gym and found your favorites and now,
although you know it is doing you good, you cannot find the
same inspiration that you had before. All is not lost and
you won't have to revert back to your unhealthy self.

Take comfort in the knowledge that this difficulty in
keeping focussed happens to everyone. It is simply your
brain reminding your body that it is time for a change.

Those who have chosen running as their route to fitness
will find it is time to come up with new routes and maybe
start some track sessions. The gym is another possibility
since this variation in training can be good for the
primary sport (running) by building strength and reducing
the chances of injuries.

Those fans of the gym might want to mix in the odd class or
two every week, or start up swimming. It is hard to just
keep going if you are all on your own. With classes the
class leader takes responsibility for the pace, and the
whole experience can be a lot of fun. Another idea is to
join a team or persuade a friend or two to join you at the
gymnasium, come for a bike ride. You will egg each other
on.

Sometimes it is not lack of motivation that gets in the way
of our exercise regime but work or other commitments. It is
easy to feel like we will lose some of the benefit or
fitness we have achieved if we miss a couple of sessions.
However, instead of feeling immediately unhealthy if you
have to miss a couple of sessions try and do something
small to compensate. For example start walking up stairs if
you do not always do so.

The lunch break is a perfect opportunity to go walking.
Short and reasonably fast helps keep you healthy - even
better if you need to attend a meeting that is not so
distant you can leave the car and avoid the taxi: walk
instead. At the end of a tiring day it is usually possible
to do a little home exercising - floor work - that will
help pick you up.

The same old routine will kill off the enthusiasm in anyone
- accept this and instead of fighting it, freshen up your
fitness program. Fitness should be fun!
